Paella may be a controversial dish, as purists will swear by a very specific list of ingredients. We now use the term "paella" referring to a spanish style of cooking rice. Originally a poor man's dish, originating in Valencia, it has become an internationally popular dish. We call it paella, but in Spain one would rather call it arroz (rice in spanish).
